Ocado’s recent results underline the difficulties for new tech competing with established operators in the growing online grocery market.

Whilst Ocado may have benefited from the shift to online grocery, challenges in resourcing labour combined with operational difficulties at some of its distribution centres, have likely restricted its ability to capitalise on in this growing market.

In contrast, the incumbents online market shares are now above their respective physical market shares, leveraging the capacity of their store networks to provide profitable last mile fulfilment capacity.

Atrato Capital Limited’s analysis of delivery slots shows how just how far Ocado has lagged established operators since Lockdown in March 2020.
